The San Antonio Spurs, after Gregg Popovich suffered a stroke and Victor Wembanyama was diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis, started to look ahead to next season, perhaps a bit earlier than they would have liked.
On paper, the Spurs should be a very good team next year. They have two stars in Wembanyama and De’Aaron Fox, established wings in Harrison Barnes, Devin Vassell, and Julian Champagnie, and wrecking balls on defense in Stephon Castle and Jeremy Sochan.
On top of that, they could add a premier talent his summer or bring back Chris Paul if they want a steady hand off the bench and in the locker room.
Sochan reflected on the season, and knows injuries and illnesses played a big part in a disapointing season, but he doesn’t expect that to be an issue next year.
“I think it’s super exciting, most of us are getting healthy or are healthy,” said Sochan. “So, this summer’s going to be huge. It’s going to be a big summer. So, we’re super excited.”
Fox made it clear that he wants to host workouts and training for the team in Texas this summer, and Wembanyama wants to play for France in the EuroBasket Tournament. France will play their first game on August 28 against Belgium, and Sochan and Poland will take on Luka Doncic and Slovenia on the same day.
However, Sochan thinks the priority should be basketball in San Antonio, especially when it comes to integrating players like Fox, their draft picks, and possible free agent or trade additions.
“We had a bunch of different additions to the team,” he explained. “So, again, it’s finding chemistry on both sides of the court.”
The Spurs will have sky-high expectations on their shoulders next season. With Wembanyama and Fox healthy, the rebuild should be over, and the Spurs should be playing winning basketball for the first time since Kawhi Leonard left.
